Újabb, a fiók mélyéről előkerült, még anno az azóta már megboldogult heavymetal.hu-nál megjelent interjúmat adom most nektek közre. Az eredeti szöveg 2011. augusztusában látott napvilágot, kérdéseimre az Evinta című gyűjteményes anyag kapcsán maga Aaron Stainthorpe, a brit My Dying Bride frontembere válaszolt. Annak ellenére, hogy 10 éves az interjú, szerintem sok a mai napig érvényes dolgot találhattok benne. Jó olvasást kívánok!

A brit My Dying Bride a Peaceville Three utolsó doom metalban megmaradt tagja idén 21. éve hogy tapossa a melankólia és elkeseredettség árnyas ösvényét. A stílust erősen meghatározó zenekar kívülről nem mutatta sohasem a fáradtság jeleit vagy a kreativitás hiányát, így a mai napig a legprofibb és legkövetkezetesebb formációk között tarthatjuk számon. A halifaxi hatos énekese/szövegírója Aaron Stainthorpe – aki egyike a mai metal világ legőszintébb, legjobb és legkreatívabb énekeseinek (ha nem a legjobb e szakmában), akinek a rímei a klasszikus líra magasságaiig felívelnek – igazán tartalmasan válaszolt kérdéseimre, amelyekből egy kicsit talán emberibb képet kaphatunk e szomorú óriásról és bandájáról.

Dr. Metal: Üdvözöllek Magyarországról! Első körben legutolsó, Evinta című gyűjteményes kiadványotokról kérdeznélek, mely nem egy szokványos lemez. Kinek az ötlete volt, hogy egy úgymond “remix” lemezt csináljatok, és ki válogatta össze hozzá az alapanyagot?

Aaron: Először végig gondoltunk mindent, amit eddig csináltunk, és kikerestük belőle a legjobb pillanatokat. Összegyűjtöttük őket, majd elküldtük Johnny Maudlingnak, aki klasszikus zenészek segítségével új formát adott ezeknek a régi dallamoknak. Teljeses más, mint amit eddig a My Dying Bride képviselt, de ismerős lesz a rajongóinknak. Az túlságosan egyszerű lett volna, ha simán csak áthangszereljük szimfonikus felvételekké a régi dalainkat, ezért keményen dolgoztunk, hogy valami valóban különlegeset alkothassunk.

Dr. Metal: Meghúzódik bármiféle koncepció az Evinta szövegei mögött?

Aaron: Nem, semmiféle koncepciója nincs, önálló művek, melyeket önmagukban kell értelmezni és élvezni. Szenvedély és kétségbeesés elegye, ami melankolikus és sötéten gyönyörű.

Dr. Metal: Olvastam a honlapotokon, hogy rövidesen új EP felvételére készültök, egyetlen 25 perces, óriási tétellel. Szólnál, kérlek néhány szót erről bővebben, avagy még nem nyilvánosak a részletek?

Aaron: Épp most írom a szövegeket, de közelebbit nem tudok mondani róla, mert még nagyon friss az egész. Az EP talán még idén kijön, ami valóban egyetlen hosszú számot fog tartalmazni, azonban három szakaszra lesz feldarabolva. Ezzel szeretnénk kielégíteni a rajongókat, amíg jövőre ki nem jön az új nagylemezünk.

Dr. Metal: Mint a zenekar poétája, miből meríted az inspirációdat?

Aaron: Az inspiráció bárhonnan jöhet. Szeretek olvasni és filmeket nézni, amely élményeim ötletetek milliárdjait tartalmazzák, amik akár egy új szövegi gondolatvilág felé is elvezetnek. De nem áll meg itt a dolog: új emberek megismerése, és életük történetének felderítése ugyanúgy kreatívan hatnak, mint a saját múltam sötét emlékeiben való kutakodás is.

Dr. Metal: A szövegeidből nagyon mély érdeklődést érzek a romantikus és gótikus irodalom irányába. Van kedvenc íród vagy költőd?

Aaron: Valójában nem kizárólagosan a romantika az, ami meghatároz. Az irodalomtörténet szinte minden korszakából vannak kedvenceim, melyek nem csak a költészet remekeiből kerülnek ki. Sőt, még a vígjátékokat is szeretem, bár hozzá kell tennem, ezen hatások kevésbé érvényesülnek a lemezeinken.

Dr. Metal: Közismert dolog, hogy magadat ateistának vallod, ennek ellenére rengeteg alkalommal találunk a dalaitokban utalásokat Istenre, a pokolra és mennyországra, valamint az ember ezekhez való viszonyára. Hogyan tudod ezeket összehozni?

Aaron: Nagyon egyszerűen. A Biblia nagyon gazdag tárháza a történetmesélésnek, és mivel imádok mesélni, így mélyen beleásom magamat megszentelt lapjaiba időről időre, de ez nem jelenti azt, hogy el is hiszem. Ugyanígy merítettem a Gyűrűk Urából is több alkalommal, de mégsem kezdtem el Gandalfhoz imádkozni!

Dr. Metal: Mi a célotok a My Dying Bride-dal? Úgy értem, több mint 20 éve játszotok rendkívül depresszív zenét. Nem fáradtatok bele az évek alatt?

Aaron: Nem, ellenkezőleg, nagyon is szeretjük! Éppen ezért csináljuk még mindig lankadatlan lelkesedéssel. Ha bármelyikünk számára is szükségtelen vagy fárasztó lett volna, már régen feladtuk volna az egészet. Azért alapítottuk a bandát, hogy szórakozzunk, illetve olyan zenét csináljunk, amilyet hallani szerettünk volna, és ugyanez a helyzet még ma is. Sosem volt se managerünk, se akaratos kiadónk, akik olyan dolgok felé vezettek volna minket, amikben nem lettünk volna biztosak. Saját magunk döntünk a dolgainkról, és senki más.

Dr. Metal: Akartál-e valaha másféle zenét játszó zenekarban énekelni? Miért?

Aaron: Nem. Időnként csinálunk néhány feldolgozást, de ez ki is elégíti azt az igényünket, hogy egy kicsit valaki mássá váljunk, de ezen túl sosem akarok változtatni azon, aki vagyok.

Dr. Metal: Mi a helyzet az “új” tagokkal? Hogy megy a munka Lenaval (basszusgitár) Dannal (dobok) és Shaunnal (billentyű és hegedű)?

Aaron: Nos, valójában sajnos Dantől meg kell, hogy váljunk, mert nem elég megbízható, valamint mivel az elmúlt két évben rengeteg sérülést szedett össze, így, hogy csak hátráltat minket, el fogja hagyni köreinkt. Távozása után sem fogunk azonban új dobost keresni, Shaun Taylor-Steels visszatér az új felvételek stúdióban való rögzítéséhez, David Grey (az Akercoke dobosa) pedig a turnékra fog minket elkísérni. Lenara és Shaunra azonban nincs panasz, remekül beilleszkedtek és remekül csinálják a dolgukat.

Dr. Metal: Szinte semmit nem lehet tudni a magánéletedről. Szólnál-e róla pár szót, illetve hogyan tudod összehangolni a turnézással?

Aaron: A magánéletemet igyekszem minél kevésbé közténnyé tenni, inkább elválasztom a nyilvánosságtól. A turnézással való összehangolása pedig egyáltalán nem okoz problémát, hiszen manapság elég ritkán lépünk fel, akkor is inkább hétvégén, ha pedig turnézunk, akkor azt végigjárjuk legfeljebb 10 nap alatt, ami már nem zavaróan nagy mennyiség.

Dr. Metal: Most már hosszú évek óta működteted Azzron című képzőművészeti honlapodat. Hogyan kezdted el csinálni, illetve van-e működő kiállításod most?

Aaron: Nem emlékszem pontosan, mikor is kezdtem el csinálni – talán akkor, mikor a bandába belevágtunk, hiszen mikor nincs ötletem szöveget írni, akkor általában készítek egy képet, ami miatt a papírra írt soraim és a képeim ugyanúgy fontosak számomra. A weblapot pedig akkor kezdtem el futtatni, mikor a lemezborítókon túl kíváncsivá váltak az emberek, hogy van-e még hasonló ötletem. Rövidesen frissíteni is fogom, még az év vége előtt. Rendszeres időközönként vannak kiállításaim is, legközelebb remélhetőleg Harrogate-ben, North Yorkshire-ben lesz novemberben, valamint talán némi back-stage dokumentáció is elő fog kerülni a banda kapcsán az idei év terméséből, amit egy helyi galériába fogunk elvinni. Továbbá jövő évben márciusban és novemberben a Whitby Goth Weekend nevű rendezvényre is elmegyek, hogy bemutassak és árusítsak néhány korlátozott példányszámú darabot, aminek azért is örülök, mert így legalább tudok a rajongókkal beszélgetni mind a zenekarról, mind a művészetemről.

Dr. Metal: Felfoghatóak az ott látott képek afféle illusztrációként a My Dying Bride zenéjéhez (természetesen kivéve a CD borítókat)?}

Aaron: Pontosan ez a lényeg bennük! Ha épp nincs kedvem a szavakhoz, vagy csak simán nem találom meg a megfelelő kifejezéseket, akkor inkább vizuálisan fogalmazom meg gondolataimat, aminek eredményeképpen szürreális és szokatlan látványokat örökítek meg, amelyek azokat a víziókat mutatják be, amik éppen kitöltik az érdeklődésemet. Természetesen nem mindenki számára tetszetősek ezek a munkák, de ez a lényegük másik része: magamnak, és nem másoknak készítem őket.

Dr. Metal: Követed egyéb doom metal alakulatok munkásságát, akik mondjuk merítenek a ti zenétekből (pl.: Draconian Svédországból) vagy olyanokat akik hasonló zenét játszanak, mint ti (pl.: Mourning Beloveth Írországból vagy a Funeral Norvégiából)?

Aaron: Túl sok zenekar van, hogy követni lehessen ezt az egész világot, így nem is szoktam foglalkozni vele. Jobban kedvelem az operákat, a Dead Can Dance zenéjét és a jó könyveket. A doom/death/gothic metal a véremben van, és imádok alkotni, ugyanúgy, ahogy szeretem gardírozni a banda üzleti oldalát is, azonban szükségem van némi kikapcsolódásra és eltávolodásra ettől az egésztől, hogy később újra élvezhessem.

Dr. Metal: Szoktál úgy gondolni a My Dying Bride-ra, mint fiatalok példaképére?

Aaron: Nem, a My Dying Bride azért van, hogy kifejezhessük magunkat vele, hogy olyan zenét csináljunk, amit hallgatni is akarunk, és ha ezen túlmenően még inspirál más zenekarokat is, akkor az csak bónusz!

Dr. Metal: A My Dying Bride a Peaceville Three utolsó olyan tagja, amely még mindig a kezdeti doom metalban utazik. Mit gondolsz a Paradise Lost és az Anathema mostani munkáiról?

Aaron: Annak ellenére, hogy mind a Paradise Losttal, mind az Anathemaval baráti a viszonyunk, nem követem a munkáikat, így kissé furcsa kommentálnom őket. Tudom, hogy nagyon bátor dolog új vizekre evezni, hiszen mindig fenn áll a lehetősége, hogy elveszíted a régi rajongókat, vagy mert az új piac nem olyan nyitott, de sok művész úgy érzi, változtatnia kell. Nincs azzal semmi baj, ha valaki tovább áll, hogy új gyümölcsöket ízleljen meg, de ez nem nekünk való, mivel boldogok vagyunk abban a melankolikus kis lyukban, amit kiástunk magunknak.

Dr. Metal: Manapság egyre kevesebbet turnéztok, mi ennek az oka?

Aaron: 2011-ben összesen 7 koncertet adtunk, tavaly pedig kb. 15-öt, ami valóban nagyon kevés és sokan kinevetnének minket ezért a mennyiségért, mi mégis így érezzük jól magunkat. Így mikor elutazunk valahova, hogy fellépjünk, egyszerre dolgozunk, és egyszerre vagyunk turisták is. Amikor azonban koncertezünk, akkor 100%-ot nyújtunk, hiszen a rajongóink is tudják, hogy az különleges alkalom. Ha egy csapat már hetek óta az utakat rója, akkor a színpadi teljesítményük nem mindig a maximum, amint a közönség is hamar felismer. Ezt pedig szeretnénk elkerülni.

Dr. Metal: Több, mint két éve jártatok utoljára Magyarországon. Utolsó alkalommal a pécsi Rockmaraton Fesztivált látogattátok meg. Hogyan tetszett a hely és a fellépés?

Aaron: Köszönjük, remekül éreztük magunkat, még annak ellenére is, hogy a velünk utazó csapat néhány tagja kissé lebetegedett utána, amit a helyben készített gyros húsnak tulajdonítottunk. Nagyon kellemes hely, szeretnénk mihamarabb visszatérni.

Dr. Metal: Tudom, hogy a kedvenc My Dying Bride CD-d a The Dreadful Hours, de van-e egy örökös kedvenc dalod, amit a mesterművednek tartasz (akár dallamai, akár szövege miatt)?

Aaron: Nincsen ilyen kedvencem. Kicsit furcsán hangozhat, de minden szerzeményt a saját gyermekemnek tekintek, éppen ezért mindegyiket szeretem, és nagyon büszke vagyok, hogy segíthettem megszületni nekik. Sosem jöttem zavarba semmitől, amit kiadtunk, ami annak is a bizonyítéka, hogy zenénk minősége nem romlott az évtizedek alatt.

Dr. Metal: Utolsó kérdésemet talán kicsit furcsának fogod találni, de mint kedvenc szövegírómtól/énekesemtől meg kell kérdeznem: nem gondoltál még arra sosem, hogy a verses kötetet adj ki, vagy, hogy akár novellákat vagy regényt írj?

Aaron: De igen, vannak ilyen terveim (és köszönöm az elismerést). Épp egy könyvön dolgozom, amiben minden eddigi alkotásom benne lesz, valamint novellák és versek is fognak kerülni bele, de nem sietem el a dolgot, kész lesz, amikor kész lesz!

Dr. Metal: Mr. Stainthorpe, nagyon köszönöm a válaszaidat! Alig várom, hogy újra eljöjjetek Magyarországra! Még 20 év doom metalt kívánok nektek!

Aaron: Én pedig köszönöm az idődet. Minél hamarabb visszatérünk Magyarországra, talán már jövőre!

Lyre, prose, visuals and a bit of Doom Metal

Another gem from the depths of my archives. An interview with Aaron Stainthorpe of My Dying Bride, back from 2011, at the time Evinta was released. Originally the text was released on the late heavymetal.hu site. Despite this is an almost 10 years old interview, I think many interesting topics and yet relevant detailes were discussed. Read it with pleasure!

Dr. Metal: Greetings Mr. Stainthorpe from Hungary! First of all I would like to tell you, I am a really big fan of your music and art! I know, that you are a really busy musician these days, and I appreciate the opportunity of making this interview with you, and I hope we can make now a very exciting interview with answers, rich of information! I would like to ask you about your recent release „Evinta”, which is a not-ordinary compilation. Whose idea was to make this kind of „remix” album, and how did you choose the relevant tracks?

Aaron: We first looked at all the songs we have ever written and examined them for the very best moments contained within. Compiled these excerpts and passed them on to Johnny Maudling and a group of classical musicians for them (and us) to arrange into classical & ambient ‘new’ pieces. The music is totally different to regular My Dying Bride but the tunes are familiar to most fans. It would have been too easy to simply do classical covers of our past material so we worked hard to not do that and go for a much more interesting option.

Dr. Metal: Is there any concept behind the new lyrics of „Evinta”?

Aaron: No, they are all individual entities to be enjoyed by themselves. Moments of great passion and misery. Melancholic and yet darkly beautiful.

Dr. Metal: I read on your website, that you are planning to record a new EP with one huge, 25 minutes track. Could you please reveal some more information about it, or the plans still are secret?

Aaron: I am writing the lyrics right now but can’t go into details as it’s obviously still very new. It will be an EP (hopefully released this year) containing one huge track which will be split into 3 Chapters. This should keep the fans happy until the new LP comes out next year which is well under way.

Dr. Metal: You are the lyricist of the band. From what do you gather your inspiration?

Aaron: Inspiration can come from anywhere at all. I like to read and watch films and within these formats are a myriad of great ideas that may or may not lead to a new lyrical concept. And it doesn’t even need to stop there; inspiration can come from meeting new people and hearing their life story as well as tapping into my own dark and sorry memories.

Dr. Metal: From your lyrics I can feel a deep fascination to the gothic romantic literature. Do you have a favourite writer or poet? Why he/she?

Aaron: Actually I don’t. I like a broad spread of literature from many era’s which isn’t always from the poetic genre. I actually love comedy too! Although it’s unlikely that much of that will appear in one of our tracks.

Dr. Metal: It is well known, that you consider yourself as an atheist, even so many of your lyrics deal with God, and the relations of God, Heaven even Hell and mankind. How can you harmonize these things?

Aaron: Quite easily. The Bible is a very rich source of story telling and I like to tell stories so dip into it’s hallowed pages from time to time but that doesn’t mean I have to believe in it. I’ve drawn inspiration from Lord Of The Rings too but I’m not about to start praying to the mighty Gandalf for divinity!

Dr. Metal: What is your purpose with My Dying Bride? Considering that you are playing a very depressive music for more than 20 years. Isn’t it a bit exhausting now?

Aaron: On the contrary, we love it! That’s why we are still going after all this time. If we hated it or found it too much of a hassle we’d have packed up ages ago. We formed the band to have a bit of fun and write music we felt we wanted to hear, and that is still the case today. We have never had a manager and a relaxed record label and so have never had anyone pushing us into things we were not sure of. We make all the decisions for this band and no-one else.

Dr. Metal: Have you ever wanted to sing in a different kind of band? Why?

Aaron: No. We do a cover song every once in a while which satisfies our urges to be someone else but I have no desire to alter what I am.

Dr. Metal: What about the “new” members of the band? Can you work well with Lena, Dan and Shaun?

Aaron: Well Dan is no longer with us as he was always very accidental and for about 2 years, had lots of broken arms & legs, so he left as he was holding us back. It was a mutual decision. We no longer have a drummer and have no plans to get one either. We will be using Shaun Taylor-Steels for rehearsing and recording and David Grey (from Akercocke) for live shows. Lena has settled in beautifully on the bass and Shaun is doing OK on the violin & keys.

Dr. Metal: I could not find any information about your personal life. May I ask about it? If yes, do you have a family? How can you harmonize your personal life with touring?

Aaron: My personal life is kept from the band and public eye. And as for it effecting touring, well to be honest, we don’t really tour these days. We do mostly weekend shows which are easy and if we do do a tour it is normally only about 10 days, which is acceptable with my personal life.

Dr. Metal: For years now, you are running your artistic page, azzron.com, which I visit regularly, if I may tell you, they are as awesome as your lyrics. When have you started it, and do you have any exhibition with your pictures now?

Aaron: I can’t remember when it all began – probably around the same time as the band because whenever I couldn’t find an idea for a lyric, I create an image instead, making my images as important as the lyrics. I started the web site as many people who saw some of my covers wanted to see if I had any more work to show, which is nice. It is in need of an update which I shall try to get around to later this year. I exhibit from time to time and will hopefully have something in a gallery in Harrogate, North Yorkshire in November and perhaps some back-stage photo’s of the band from 2011 in some local galleries next year. I may also be selling some limited edition prints at the Whitby Goth Weekend next year either March or November where I’m happy to talk with fans about the band and my art.

Dr. Metal: May I think about your pictures as physical illustrations for your lyrics and the music of My Dying Bride (not including the covers of CDs)?

Aaron: That’s it. If I’m not in the mood for words – or just can’t find the right words to put down then I’ll get creative in the visual manner instead, coming up with surreal and unusual interpretations of the visions in my mind which are obviously no to everyone’s’ tastes but that’s fine by me; I’m not doing it for anyone else, just me.

Dr. Metal: Do you follow any other doom metal bands, who are inspired by your music (like Draconian from Sweden) or just playing some similar music (like Mourning Beloveth from Ireland or Funeral from Norway)? Or who is your favourite music group today?

Aaron: There are far too many bands to keep track of these days and so I don’t really bother, preferring to listen to opera, Dead Can Dance or read a good book. Doom/death/gothic metal is in my blood and I love creating it as well as the business side of running a band but I need time away from it too in order that I can enjoy it again when I dive back in.

Dr. Metal: Do you think about My Dying Bride as an icon for the young doom metal bands?

Aaron: No, I think about My Dying Bride creating our own music – the music that we ourselves want to hear, and if that inspires other bands, then that’s an added bonus.

Dr. Metal: My Dying Bride is the only remaining member of the “Peaceville Three” who is playing the same doom metal music, as in the beginning. What do you think about the recent works of Paradise Lost and Anathema?

Aaron: I don’t follow either band despite being very friendly with them so it’s tricky for me to comment on what it is that they are doing these days. I know it’s very brave to venture into new territories because you may lose your original fan base and the market you’re aiming at may not be too welcoming, but some bands feel the need to go for it probably because they feel that they are getting a little stale doing what they first did all those years ago. There’s nothing wrong with moving on and tasting different fruits, it’s just not for us right now as we’re pretty happy in the melancholic little hole that we’ve dug for ourselves.

Dr. Metal: How can you get acclimatized to touring?

Aaron: Well, we don’t tour very much. In 2011 we will only play a grand total of 7 live shows! And last year it was probably 15. Most bands would either laugh at that or find it unbelievable but we’re cool with it. Nice an steady, picking the places we want to go to (we are actually tourists!) and not getting stressed at being forced to play all over the place all the time. When we do shows we give 100% because it’s a special occasion and the fans know it. If a band has been on the road for many weeks, the live performance can be a little tired and weary and the fans can spot that too, which is something we avoid as it’s not great to witness.

Dr. Metal: It is now two years ago since your last visit in Hungary. You stepped on the stage at the city of Pécs, on the Rockmaraton Festival, where we also met at the signing sessions. Since that time your signed “For Lies I Sire” CD is the favourite piece of my record collection. Did you enjoy that tour and concert?

Aaron: We had a great time thanks although some of the band and crew did get a bit sick after which they blamed on some dodgy kebab meat they ate from the canteen tent. It’s a lovely place and we’re sure to return fairly soon.

Dr. Metal: I know that your favourite My Dying Bride CD is The Dreadful Hours, but do you have an all time favourite song, which you consider as your masterpiece (thinking about the lyrics or the music, or the two together)?

Aaron: No actually. This sounds a bit odd but the tracks are like my children and I love all of them and am very proud to have helped create them. I have never been embarrassed about anything that we have released which is testament to the quality of our music over the decades.

Dr. Metal: My last question could be a not ordinary one, but as you are my favourite lyricists, so I would like to ask: haven’t you ever considered about to publish your lyrics as poems or to write any kind of novel or short stories?

Aaron: I have and I will (and thanks for the comment). I’m working on a book which will have all the lyrics as well as short stories and poems but there’s no hurry and it will be ready when it’s ready.

Dr. Metal: Mr. Stainthorpe! Many thanks for your kind answers! I can’t wait the time to see you on stage at Hungary again and to get your new EP and full-length next year! I wish you 20 more years of doom metal!
